In the fast-paced world of journalism, the stories we tell and how we tell them have the power to shape societal norms. To help media professionals navigate the complexities of gender in reporting, fraycollege is proud to offer our Gender Sensitivity in the Newsroom e-learning course for free. The self-paced online course, developed with support from GIZ’s Partnerships for the Prevention of Gender-Based Violence in Southern Africa (PfP) programme, is designed to strengthen journalism education and newsroom practice by addressing key gender-related challenges.

Why This Course Matters

Media content often reflects the cultural narratives and gender norms of the society it serves. Without conscious effort, bias and stereotypes can easily slip into our reporting. This course provides journalists, editors, and students with practical tools to recognise these biases while improving their understanding of the South African legal and normative frameworks that guide gender-sensitive reporting. By mastering these legal parameters and ethical standards, you can help foster more accurate storytelling and a more inclusive workplace culture.

What You Will Learn

The course is a self-paced, online program consisting of four comprehensive modules:

  • Module 1: Gender, Culture and the Media – Identify gender bias and develop strategies for balanced storytelling.
  • Module 2: Legal and Normative Frameworks – Understand the South African laws and media codes of conduct that guide sensitive reporting.
  • Module 3: Reporting GBV and Digital Harassment – Learn ethical, survivor-centered approaches to covering gender-based violence and digital harassment.
  • Module 4: Building Gender-Sensitive Newsrooms – Discover how to promote equitable leadership and become an agent for change.

Your Voice Matters: Feedback & Assessment

We want this course to be as impactful as possible, which is why we’ve built in opportunities for you to share your thoughts. At the end of each module, you’ll find short prompts to help you reflect on the content and provide us with quick feedback on its relevance to your daily work.
