The media and communications landscape is changing rapidly. These changes bring complex challenges that demand not just strong decision-making but also the ability to inspire and motivate teams. Leadership development is not a nice-to-have, it’s an essential investment in an organisation’s future. As we navigate a landscape marked by innovation and uncertainty, the ability to cultivate leaders from within becomes a vital strategy for success.

In response to this, fraycollege recently partnered with the Association of Independent Publishers (AIP) for a Business Leadership Development programme, aimed at enhancing leadership skills in independent newsrooms across South Africa. The training, held in October 2024, focused on empowering senior and junior leaders with essential leadership and management tools.

The fraycollege leadership development is customised for the needs of each organisation but includes core elements like:

  • Leadership styles
  • Knowing your strengths and weaknesses
  • Leadership vs management
  • Getting the best from your team
  • Change management

Due to the demands of the participants involved in the AIP training, their programme also covered topics such as financial sustainability and human resources.

“The session on Financial Sustainability was key to me because it taught me ways to handle the finances in our small media company,” say Sikhumbuzo Mokwena from TembisaTV. “One of the ways I learned that I can keep our company financially strong is by hiring equipment instead of spending thousands on cameras,” he adds.

By the end of the programme, participants gained a comprehensive understanding of how to lead both editorial and business functions within their organisations. The training ensures that independent publishers are better equipped to manage their teams and sustain their operations in a challenging industry.
